A Photographic Guide to the Evaluation of Hazard Trees in Urban Areas
This second edition, co-authored by Nelda Matheny and James Clark of HortScience, Inc., Pleasanton, CA, is designed to assist managers in evaluating trees for their potential to be hazardous. By providing a systematic rating approach, evaluations allow mangers to identify hazard situations, rank their relative severity, and create a priority for work. Along with numerous one-color figures, there is a 16-page section containing 43 full-color figures. The guide concentrates primarily on trees in urban areas. These environments are recognized as having unique combinations of tree species and site characteristics that place trees in proximity to a variety of targets requiring a more systematic approach to evaluation and abatement.

Guide for Plant Appraisal, Ninth Edition
Authored by the Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers, this publication is intended to provide the professional plant appraiser with information to properly determine the size, species, condition, and location factors that influence the value of plants. It can be used for the valuation of plant casualties, insurance purposes, real estate transactions, plant condemnation actions, and tree inventories.

In the 9th edition of the Guide for Plant Appraisal, the most significant procedural change is that in both methods (Replacement Cost and Trunk Formula) the costs of the replacement tree and its installation are adjusted by the Species rating. The rationale for this is that the costs of an installed replacement tree are based on its cost of production and its cost of installation. These costs do not necessarily reflect the quality of the species when mature, therefore, they also are adjusted by the Species rating.

The individual steps in the written directions and in the appraisal worksheets are similarly numbered in both the Replacement Cost Method and the Trunk Formula Method so that there is less chance for confusion. Within each, the steps are divided into: 1) Field Observations, 2) Regional Plant Appraisal Committee and/or Appraiser Developed or Modified Information, and 3) Calculations by Appraiser Using Field and/or Regional Information.
